ANGBAND NOTES (A and B) I already know/have heard: - Roguelike concepts from Nethack, Brogue and Dwarf Fortress - Angband is based on Lord of the Rings - You start in a town and frequently return there. Your ultimate goal is to prepare for a battle with Morgoth. - As you defeat enemies, you learn more about them. This persists between games. 6/9/22 (A) Picked a human warrior - Warriors start with 3 food rations, 1 potion of berserk strength, 1 scroll of word of recall, 2 torches, 1 dagger, soft leather armor, and 140 gold. Q: how do I activate my torch? A: oh I see, I already started with one, so I have two - Levelling up gives more hp - Cutpurses steal your gold and then vanish Q: Do cutpurses teleport somewhere else or just straight up disappear? Q: Do these different types of stone mean anything? - These floors are huge - Potion that exists: potion of slowness Slowness is -10 (idk what that means), does not stack - I can move diagonally with no problems - Scroll: Treasure detection Detects all objects, not just treasure. Marks coins vs. non-coins Seems to have limited range - Potion: Cure light wounds (?) - AC starts at 10 and goes down (like in nethack) - Potion: Speed is +10 (what does that mean) Lasts 20+2d10 turns Being under the effects of both slowness and speed means your speed is unchanged But if one wears off before the other, you'll be slow or fast after it wears off - Grey mushrooms release confusion spores when you're next to them Only lasts ~2 turns, but can be reapplied to last longer - Status effect: Confused Completely random movement - Items such as potions or scrolls often spawn in stacks of up to 4 - My character often picks locks and disarms traps automatically - Scroll: Blessing Applies the "blessed" status effect for 6+1d12 turns - Status effect: Blessed Extends your AC and to-hit bonus Q: by how much? AC went up by +5, idk about to-hit bonus - Status effects etc last a really short time in this game - Scroll: Light Surrounds you with light Q: The visual effect looked kind of like a blast. Can I use this to damage anything? - Scroll: Phase door Teleports you Q: Somewhere nearby or just anywhere on the level? - Item: Robe +2 AC - Q: Does class determine what equipment you can wear? - Actually, AC starts at 2 and goes up. - Found a second downstair. Does it matter which one I pick? - Potion: Sleep Paralyzes you for a bit - Potion: Neutralize poison Haven't tested it yet, but I can guess - Found the cutpurse that took my money. A: When cutpurses vanish, it's only to somewhere else in the level - Trap: Teleport trap Teleports you somewhere else on the same level (not nearby) - There's a thingy under my stats that shows you enemies' HP - Found a "quartz vein with treasure" in the wall, but have no way to get the treasure out. - Enemies will sometimes "flee in terror" at low health - Floating eyes have a gaze attack (idk what it does) - Found an invisible monster, but it wasn't very hard to kill - Found a second upstair. Does it also lead back to town? - There are bricks on the top and bottom of this level. Is that just a natural barrier? - Q: The weapons in the store have (+0, +0) and similar numbers next to them. What do they mean? - Apparently you can use weapons to clear walls. Should try it some time. - Both strength and dexterity effect your attack speed - Q: is blows/round based on anything or is it just by weapon type? - I bought a Main Gauche, since it apparently had the highest damage/round - Q: what does it mean when a store item is "unseen"? - Q: how much can I carry? - Potion: boldness Cures fear - Scroll: detect invisible Detects invisible creatures nearby (?) - Scroll: remove curse Attempts to remove a curse with power 20+1d20 Q: what does that mean? Q: are some curses more powerful than others? - Scroll: Remove hunger "leaves you nourished for 5000 turns (50%) - Scroll: word of recall returns you from the dungeon or takes you there after a short delay Q: how short? A: definitely too long to be useful as an escape item - Scroll: recharging Attempts to recharge a wand or staff, destroying it on failure Q: What causes a failure? - Potion: cure serious wounds Heals 40 hp, cures blindness, wounds, and confusion Feeds you 1% for 100 turns - Q: I don't think I understand the hunger system in this game - Scroll: enchant weapon to-hit Gives +1 to a weapon's to-hit bonus - A: when an item is "unseen", it just means you haven't found it yet and don't know its randomized appearance. Buying it will identify it. - Accidentally used to-hit scroll on a dagger. Oh well. Now I know the first number in parentheses means the to-hit bonus, and the second is probably damage - Bought a Leather Scale Mail (-1) [20, +0]. Obviously the [20] means its bonus to AC, but what do the -1 and +0 mean? - I went downstairs again and it was different. I guess levels don't persist. - Manual: You can mine the walls with special weapons - Q: I'd like to see what's in a treasure vein. Should buy a weapon for it. - "You feel that there is naught but cobwebs here." - Doesn't mean lack of monsters - Doesn't mean lack of items - Could mean lower frequency of stuff - Floating eyes have a gaze attack that paralyzes you for a short time, but melee attacking them isn't dangerous - "This seems a tame, sheltered place" - Enemy: Fang, Farmer Maggot's Dog Does the name mean anything special? - Status effect: poison Does 1 damage/turn Can be reapplied to last longer - Potion: Slime mold juice - Found a cutpurse carrying a scroll of phase door. Maybe they don't have an innate ability to teleport, but that one just did that once - When things are cursed, they can have dangerous side-effects - being cursed doesn't stop you from just taking the item off - Rune: paralysis curse sometimes paralyses you - "Something makes a high-pitched shriek." Could be a shrieking fungus - "You hear a sudden stirring in the darkness!" (immediately after a high-pitched shriek) Could be the shrieking fungus summoning creatures (this happens in nethack) - Zap-identifying wands also tells you how many charges they have - Wands have a "success chance" (idk what it's based on, maybe device skill?) - Wand: Magic missile - "You feel that there aren't many treasures here" Q: Does that mean few or none? - Potion: Heroism Heals 10 hp, cures fear, applies "heroism" for 25+1d25 turns - Status effect: Heroism ???? 6/10/22 (B) - If you give items to stores, the items will be in stock there - Q: how do I sell? - There's a day/night cycle in town Q: What does time of day effect? - Q: do shops ever restock their inventory? - Q: why are cloaks sold in the general store and not as armor? - "you feel that there are only scraps of junk here" Q: are these sorts of discouraging messages saying there's not very much treasure compared to how much there could be, or just that low levels don't have much treasure - ring: searching Gives +enchantment to "searching skill" - ring: protection Gives +enchantment AC - Q: is there any correlation between danger of a level and loot? - Q: can I get my light radius larger? - these floors are so large and they reset, so there's no point fully exploring them - theory: one "percent" of food is 100 turns, so when it says something like "feeds you for 3000 turns (30%), it just means 3000 turns and 30% food are the same thing - encountered "Bullroarer the hobbit", a tougher enemy idk why a hobbit is trying to kill me - theory: named enemies are more dangerous - damage per round likely doesn't take to-hit bonus into account, so an item with a lower dpr could still be better - Q: what's the benefit of lighter armor over heavier armor? - "you get in a shield bash!" extra attack? can one dual wield and also get these? - fought grip, farmer maggot's dog why does farmer maggot have so many dogs? - Q: do sectors impact the range of things like detect treasure? - if i can't sell loot, i might be better off not picking things up that I won't use - status effect: afraid makes you not want to attack enemies from yellow molds+fungus - trap: strange rune ??? (i disarmed it before i could trigger it :() - sometimes enemies are "frozen to the spot" after they've fled from me. is it fear, or do i just have a paralysis attack i don't know about? - detect treasure detects items held by enemies - Q: what's to stop me from being as slow as possible and farming on really easy levels until i'm vastly overpowered? - Q: is there a time limit? - L4: was followed by an invisible guy who harassed me and cast spells. - Q: do some items only start appearing at certain depths? - scroll: deep descent applies the descent status effect, which causes you to go down ? floors (i went down by 6) i then died shortly after due to being outclassed - wand: Wonder "creates random and unpredictable effects" - fought Wormtongue, agent of Saruman - he can summon traps, heal himself, cast frost bolt, and more - weak attacker but his spells are dangerous and he has a lot of health - shield bash probably stuns enemies - "you hit [enemy]. It was a good hit!" appeared to do about 2x as much damage - died
